The domestic role play area is inspired by everyday home environments that young children can relate to. The table, hob and sink kitchen units create an inviting space where children can explore familiar routines, imitate the actions of others, and represent their own experiences through play. As they play alongside others, negotiate roles, and respond to one another's ideas, they develop confidence in expressing themselves. Children hear and use new vocabulary, extending their language in meaningful contexts while making sense of the world around them.
The realistic wooden kitchen units and table encourage children to investigate, explore and repeat familiar actions. The resource collection offers children a tea and breakfast set to imitate familiar breakfast scenarios. For example, children can use a bowl as a saucepan on the hob to cook the eggs, then use their developing fine motor skills to place the egg into the egg cup and deliver to their peers sat by the table. At the table, peers can be served their tea using the cups and teapot.
Once breakfast is finished, children can transport the washing up to the sink and imitate washing up. These repeated experiences develop schemas, including transporting and containing, helping them build knowledge through active, hands-on play. These schemas develop coordination, control and increasing independence while building an understanding of everyday routines.
Caring for babies and pets within the home environment provides meaningful opportunities for children to explore nurturing relationships through play. As they comfort, settle and care for their babies, or look after their pets, children begin to make sense of familiar experiences and routines from home. These everyday interactions support the development of empathy, emotional understanding and a growing awareness of the needs of others, while encouraging children to express care and kindness through purposeful play.
